This picture is made after a photo never taken. We, my dog and I encountered a young Ocelot on or usual three mile morning walk between ocean and Jungle, just before sunrise. All three of us were very surprised. Neither of us could be decide on being fascinated or scared. We finally parted in different directions. Truth we see the Ocelot from time to time the cat is shy and close encounters are rear.
I am still experimenting with rather unusual material combinations. This picture is done on construction paper with Oil Pastels.

The name Ocelot comes from Nahuatl [Azteca] and refers to Jaguar. The Ocelot is a similar but smaller species.
The feline is also known as Tegrillo - little Tiger and Tigre Cangrejero - crab-eating Tiger[Mexico], Manigordo [Costa Rica and Panama] Jaguatirica [Brazil] and Cunaguaro [Venezuela].
The Ocelot [Leopardus pardalis] is a night hunter and eats mostly rodents, lizards, frogs, birds, crab and fish, pray much smaller than him.
The fur was once considered valuable what caused the killing of hundreds of thousands of the beautiful cats. The Ocelot was classified as endangered species in 1972. The special attention what his bigger cousin the Jaguar got had also positives for the Ocelot. Thanks to the international afford to protect the species the Ocelot was rated of "least concern" by the 2008 IUCN Red List.
Today's concern is mostly the loss of environment to deforestation and the illegal animal trade. Since the Ocelot resembles also a domestic cat some are hold as pets. The best known Pet-Ocelot is probably the one Salvador Dali has owned.
