Digital Painting of the Month Contest Entry
We spend some time of the late 90รข??s traveling through the Arizona dessert. We traveled of the beaten pas. We parked the RV were ever we wanted; preferable in the middle of nowhere. It seems long time ago; but the memories are fresh as yesterday. The sunsets were some of the most amazing I have ever seen. Of course, I took a lot of photos, on film back than but most of the negatives and paper prints got lost in the hurricanes through the last decade. The few survivors are damaged. I decided to paint what got lost. I used some of my surviving photos and some of my surviving National Geographic editions as reference, but the painted sunset landscape is memory and imagination. Saguaro [Carnegiea gigantea] is a native plant of Arizona, in small parts of California and the Baja California and the Mexican state Sonora. The Saguaro blossom is the state flower of Arizona. The cactus gets to 50 feet tall. They grow only from seeds; never from cuttings. The cactus soak up water whenever it rains and will visibly expand after a good rain. It stores the rainwater and consumes it slowly. Native birds will build their nest in holes inside the Saguaros.
