There are several variants of the saying in m any languages all over the world. It is a more than 2000 year old rule of thumbs for weather forecasting. The fiery glow is caused by clouds or hazes which are related to storms in the region. Do to the earth rotation; storms have the tendency to travel eastward. A storm approaching from west is often announced by a reddish sunrise.
The photo was taken near PaaMul at the Yucatan peninsula, Quintana Roo, Mexico at 6:15 am on August 2, 2011.
