Dancing Fly Story

These are dancing flies created from acorns. Thought you might like to read the story in how they came to be. You WON'T believe it!

I have suffered from anxiety and depression all my life and it's affected everything surrounding my life. After my mother died eight years ago I was really in bad shape. My sister-in-law feeling I needed a little company, suggested I come along with my brother and her to their summer camp in Maine. I was a little hesitant because it was a Long drive from their house (8 hours) With just pit stops. I wasn't sure if I could make it without a severe anxiety attack. It took me two years and a LOT of persuasion to finally accept their invitation to their cabin by the sea. My sister-in-law assured me that once I arrived it would be VERY relaxing. There would be lovely surf and calming waves. My troubles would just melt away. "Just think of the pictures you can take.", she said. I have to admit it did sound Heavenly. I decided I'd go with them.

Their next trip would be October when they closed the camp for the year. I was looking forward to the lovely foliage and the red blueberry fields of Maine. By the time we got to Maine it was dark. We drove by blueberry fields and rolling hills and mountains but I couldn't see a darn thing. I was a little down but still glad I made the trip. After making it through the Looooong drive I was glad to finally arrive at their campsite. What a relief! I could finally relax!

We couldn't see anything except what was illuminated by my brother's van. My bother Ken parked the van and went to turn on the porch light. NO POWER! No Lights! No HEAT! We trudged in to the camp with our baggage trying not to trip and had to light candles. MY sister-in-law called the power company, It was 6PM. The power company thought they'd be there before the night was over but didn't know when. They didn't seem to quite know where we were located. While waiting for them to arrive we sat outside beneath the stars in the lawn chairs with blankets wrapped around us listening to coyotes.

After an hour be went back inside with NO sign of the power company. The sky was lovely but it was a bit cold outside. About an hour later we saw lights coming down their long driveway. YEAH! We would at last have lights and heat. Fifteen minutes later we were celebrating, power had been restored! Little did we know what we were in-store for next!

The fun started when my sister-in-law Wendy, saw a couple of flies on the ceiling light. Ken got the fly swatter and took care of the problem. Now it was my turn to see two more there. I swatted them and then two more arrived. It seemed every time we killed a couple two more would arrive. Ken had a swatter and so did I but we couldn't seem to get the situation under control. Where were they coming from? There wasn't a swarm, just a couple at a time. Since this all happened over a long time period so we didn't think we had a problem, at first. We'd been laughing up to this point. When Wendy saw 5 flies, she exclaimed they dancing on the overhead lamp and started laughing at their antics. This was the first time we thought there might have a problem.

There were no smells that indicated something had died. NO clues at all WHY this was happening. We had bug spray and swatters but nothing stopped the continual onslaught of these pesky bugs. By this time I had to use the bath room to pee. When I turned on the bathroom light there were a good hundred flies on it. I told my brother he'd better get in there fast! He literally fumigated the bath room with the last of the bug spray. There were still MORE and we were breathing in bug spray fumes.

We'd been fighting for 2 hours and this was the turning point. At 10PM Wendy called and made a reservation for a hotel an hour away. We weren't going to stay in the cabin for the night! Next day we bought bug bomb at WalMart and fumigated the cabin. After the fumigation we had to let the cabin air out so we could move in. My Brother crawled under the cabin with a flashlight and checked out the attic. He didn't find a thing that would explain why all those flies were there. There was nothing there to attracr them We didn't have any more trouble, but we did have to clean up many a dead fly. My first day and night there were NOT relaxing. Who'd ever think this would be my introduction to Maine. This story is WHY I created the flies!

My brother and sister in law have a lot of Oak trees and LOTS of acorns back at home. I gathered some figuring I could create something with them. The "Dancing Flies" is the first acorn creation I made. I wanted to have something to commemorate my relaxing visit to Maine. I also wanted to tease my sister in law about it.

The acorns were washed and drilled with a Dremel tool. I placed wire down the center for the legs, and antennae. Then glued the acorns together,. I used wire to form the wings and glued material to them, then glued them on the back. Google eyes were added, a barberry nose and a wire smile. Since I wanted these little performers to look professional, I made a little ribbon tie and glued that on the front. The legs were bent to resemble dancing and I couldn't help but add a sign.

One of the wires in the legs is poked into Styrofoam so these guys could stand.I presented my little gift the next time we went to Maine. It sits proudly in their cabin and we still laugh at my first relaxing visit. We've never encountered the problem again . It's still a mystery on where the flies came from. Amityville?

And YES! I absolutely had fun making these guys
I hope you enjoy, Thanks SO much for stopping by and a BIG thank yyou for the people who had the patience to read this.
