This is not a nice guy. He is a worker-warrior of RIFA, the Red Imported Fire Ant. They bite and sting frequently and simultaneously if disturbed. The mandibles are strong. The RIFA is one of 280 species in the genus Solenopsis. The ants are native to South America, but colonies were accidentally introduced with cargo to several countries around the world. They have become a pest and health hazard In the USA, Australia, the Caribbean and parts of Asia.
