My daughters were traveling in Europe and I was unable to go. They sent photos of their trip, which inspired a series of paintings I called "Second Hand Italy". The photo that inspired this painting was actually in the Louvre in Paris. I was intrigued by the green patina on the bronze sculpture, and the expression of defiance on the man's face, even though he was in bondage.
