When Pandora opened her box...

Pandora's Redress

This is a picture (derived from a photograph by Horst) about the story of Pandora's box and how Pandora sought to redress her wrong. In classical Greek mythology, Pandora was the first woman on Earth. On her wedding day, Pandora was given a wedding gift of a beautiful box, with instructions to not open it under any circumstance. Impelled by her curiosity, Pandora opened it and all evil contained therein escaped and spread over the earth. She hastened to close the box, but the whole contents had escaped except for one thing that lay at the bottom, the Spirit of Hope, named Elpis. It is this spirit that I've represented by the dove with the olive branch being released to an upturned world (it is upside down!) of black (death) and red (blood) which rests on her feet. The dove's the agent of Pandora's redress and the cure for the ills she unwittingly unleashed. Happy viewing and let's keep up the hope for a better world.
