Choose one not both

War Or Peace

Coloured and graphite pencils.

This is a trompe l'oeil ('deceive the eye') drawing. In this image, the figure in red offers the viewer a choice between two keys labelled War and Pax (Latin for 'Peace'). He points at a white swan bearing the Earth like the mythical Atlas whilst being attacked by an eagle. In the background are Irene, the mythical goddess of peace face to face with Mars, the god of war. I also wrote the following poem to accompany this which are words spoken by the figure in red:

'War' and 'Peace' are keys to worlds distinct,
And though by my ring the two are linked,
You cannot choose both; you must choose one
For of worlds where both reign, I know none.

There's no peaceful war or warring peace;
Where one begins, the other must cease.
Like life and death, two sides of a coin,
Are War and Peace; 'tween them there's no join.
