Unlike many other blossoms, the COSMO flower does not have a particularly long history. The word itself is derived from a Greek word meaning 'harmony' or 'balanced universe' and was said to have been given to this flower by Spanish priests in Mexico who grew them in their mission gardens. The priests reportedly felt that because of their symmetrically aligned petals these flowers were analogous to an 'ordered universe.'

In the language of flowers, COSMOS represent peace and order. When given as a gift, they express joy in love and life. Additionally, COSMOS are the flower for October and second wedding anniversaries.

Pictured here is one variety of COSMOS I grow in my gardens. Known as 'Picotee', I think it is one of the most beautiful of all COSMOS. Unlike other white COSMOS this variety has a glossy, satin-like finish and each blossom is edged in shades of rich rosy-red. Like many flowers COSMOS close slightly once the sun goes down.
