Teaching in the Jungle

Nothing is ordinary about this teacher, not his face, nor his unruly beard or the hair shaved on the forehead in the fashion of the ancient Maya people. This teacher is a native of the Yucatan and indeed Maya. He is teaching at a school which is as unusual as himself. The school is hidden in a small pueblo [village] in the semi-tropical jungle of the Yucatan peninsula which is only accessible over a very bumpy farm road just wide enough for one car and only outside the rainy season. His students are between 5 and 15 years old. Their benches are placed beneath palms and banana trees on school days. Much is learned just by memory because writing materials are rare. Amazingly is that those children memorize three languages, their native Maya dialect, the Spanish dialect of the Yucatan and English. Therefore, those children often translate between volunteering medical doctors and the officials of the Yucatan government.
