Columbia, a 23 foot tall statue is the poetic symbol of the United States. She is holding a laurel branch and sits atop of the glass dome of Memorial Hall. Memorial Hall was built in 1876 for the 1876 Centennial Exposition. It is the only major structure from the exhibition to survive and is now used for a children's museum called Please Touch. The other statues that surround her (not all shown) symbolizes industry, commerce, agriculture and mining.
