Social commentary

Notes from GWOT - Comeupence

by Trajan

The author has placed a warning on this post for sexual content.
Hello fellow FAR-ians. This is my first post of the new year. I have been pondering current events, and see a really interesting and problematic phenomena transpiring. I have tentatively called these explorations: Transmissions from GWOT.
What is GWOT? GWOT is a book by George Mendoza. I read incessantly as a child and . I must have checked this book out of the school library at least 20 times. My parents thought I was strange, but I loved it and re-read it repeatedly. "GWOT, I ate it!" Is a line uttered by an old woman at the end of a story about eating a hairy toe. As an adult, GWOT morphed into a place between places, where odd things occur that defy common sense. These "things" or "events" can be morally and ethically understood by those that do not live and breath the "Internet of things". They can also be understood by a child, as they see through to the heart of things. For instance, if you talk to a kid about how cool it is to be connected to everyone, they will ask fairly quickly "What if I do not want to be connected to Joey, because Joey is mean!!???" So, here it is: An serious event transpires: Sexual Harassment, Fake ICMB Warnings, Brexit, or political change in Zimbabwe.
Soon a hastag develops: #METOO, #TBT, #KEEPCALM, #DUMP MUGABE, ETC. In conjunction with the hastag, comes monetization of said event, through a series of Tweets or YouTube vids supported by advertisers seeking to get in front of the most people. These Tweets will provide links to sites like Amazon, where you can then buy these Tweets, etc. on shirts, coffee mugs or to sites seeking money to fight the good fight. Transmissions from GWOT: Mobile Comeuppance is a piece about sexual harassment and how a huge market has just sprang up in digital space to deal with the issue. These range from human resource posters for sale, to corporate training sessions (usually mandated attendance and led by a high paid consultant), and legal aid ads. I am not denying sexual harassment here. Its a huge problem that I have witnessed a multitude of times in small and large ways. It is finally after, oh 2000 plus years getting the attention that is deserves.
The issue I see is the race in the "Internet of things" to come up with some app or way to monetize the issue. Think of this as the modern equivalent of the ice cream/candy man showing up at Marie Antoinette's public beheading selling his wares. This piece is about that. Transmissions from GWOT.
