it is called a lotus but it is a tropical water lily; lotus have BOTH leaves and flowers emerging above the water level;................................... regular water lilies have BOTH leaves and flowers floating on water;................... the tropical water lily has ONLY the flower emerging above the water.....it is genetically related to the water lilies, not to the nelumbo family (lotus)
