American White Pelicans

Pelicans Landing

White Pelicans are similar to Brown Pelican in shape, but they are much larger and very different in behavior. They do not plunge dive from the air into the water for fish like the Browns do. White Pelicans dip their beaks into the water to catch fish.

Their black flight feathers are only visible when their wings are spread.
They will also gather in flocks and soar very high in the air circling in unison.

I took a few shots of some soaring pelicans, but of course I would need a 1200mm or a 5200 super telephoto lens to get the detail I would like! It is an interesting sight to see, I think mostly because of their size.
