The VIOLA (almost 500 species) is part of the Violaceae family. They are referred to as both 'Pansy' and 'Violets'....in fact, the two are often used interchangeably. When a distinction is made, plants considered to be Pansies have four petals pointing upwards, and only one pointing down. Violets have three petals pointing up and two pointing down. One of the toughest little flowers, VIOLAS come packed with history, folklore and symbolism.
A diminutive flower, the VIOLA has a whole array of meanings, many to do with color, many to do with its gentle size and appearance. Most meanings are pleasant ones, denoting spiritual wisdom, humility and faithfulness and the fondness people have for the flower has placed it on the calendar as the flower for the month of February.
VIOLAS most common aka name is 'Johnny-Jump-Up'. The only ones I ever actually planted in my gardens are solid yellow ones and solid black ones yet the lovely, little blue and purple ones pictured here pop up in new and unexpected places each season. Young leaves and flowers are edible. They can be used raw in salads or cooked- especially in sauces and jellies.
