Animal Art Contest Contest Entry
A close friend of mine gave me my first commissioned project, she handed me a photo which was a very wide shot of Sophie wearing a muddy, navy blue coat. I decided to go with the up close and personal portrait of her face. It wasn't until after I started she told me it was going to be her wedding gift to her sister...so no pressure 😅. I started by sketching the shape of her head and mapping out the main features like eyes, nostrils, hair and that black beauty style patch. After deciding on a lighter background I would lay frisket film over the whole piece and cut out the main feature leaving the background protected from overspray. Then I'm free to start building up the layers starting with a light orange to highlight detail and contours of facial muscles adding the darker colours as I progressed. In the end I decided to leave the coat on as a way of bringing extra colour to the picture and a nice way of adding her name I thought. After finishing the background I used black and white pencils for hairline detail and to bring out some highlights, I think that final touch is what realy brings it to life. I'm happy to say she was very chuffed with her Sofie portrait and sent me a photo of her posing with it. I asked for permission to post on f.a.r website and she happily gave it saying "my Sophie will be a celeb" lol.
