There are three types of North American bluebirds. The Mountain Bluebird; the males are entirely powder blue, the Western Bluebird; the males have a blue throat and blue belly, which are the only differences from the male Eastern Bluebird which has a white belly and rust throat. The females of the three types have bluish grey coloration on their backs, wings and heads, the Western and Eastern females have faded orange chests.

The Eastern Bluebird is the most widespread of the three bluebird types. Although they are mostly found in the Eastern half of North America, their total range extends south to Nicaragua.
