Taking fish from Cormorants

Pouncing Pelican

While watching the pelicans and cormorants on the Mississippi River I noticed a pattern in their interactions. Whenever a cormorant would catch a fish, a nearby pelican would quickly swoop in and try to take the fish.

The cormorants would dive under the water with their fish, and the pelican would pounce on top of the cormorant until they were both under the water, and sometimes the pelican would emerge with the fish in it's mouth pouch!

I'm not sure why the cormorants would continue to fish so close to the pelicans. This cormorant was able to keep his fish.
