A while ago one of our photographers posted an amazing close up portrait of a wolf which fascinated me. I ask her and she gave me permission to paint it. I did not know than that faces and expressions wolfs are more complicated than people. I couldn't get the portrait quite right. I believe the reason was that I just did not know enough about wolfs. We haven't any wolfs in Texas, so I studied photos of wolfs, the expressions as well as the proportions of the body and the textures and colors of fur, of several wolfs in books and on line and then started scratching and painting them. I am still working on the portrait which started this series, but I decided to post some of my finished paintings in the meantime.

As reference for this portrait I used several photos published by Defenders of Wildlife in their publications and annual calendars.
