Leopard leaving kill in tree, Serengeti
by Brian Firth
Wildlife Photo Contest Contest Entry
This male leopard had a kill in an acacia tree near the Mara river in the northern Serengeti, Tanzania earlier this month (July, 2018). We saw the kill in the tree and returned two days later to find the leopard in the tree at the kill. As soon as we stopped our Land Cruiser, he became skittish and decided to get out of the tree as fast as he could. He moved from left to right across the upper branches, and then retraced his steps and decided that the fastest way down was on the left side of the tree. At the right moment he looked up, and that produced this photo. The eyes and long whiskers were striking. The total sighting lasted no more than one and a half minutes. It was magical.
