The common English name is misleading of the Northern Cardinal [Cardinal cardinalis] is misleading because the bird is native to most of the eastern and central United States, Mexico and parts of Central America. While some birds stay all year around, others from temperate climates migrate to warmer regions for the winter.
Although some birds are polygamous. Most are monogamous for at least one breeding season. Some will stay monogamous and reunite with their mates each breeding season through their life.
