Fountain of Youth painting at Columbia Restaurant

Finding the Fountain

by shoregrass

This painting of Ponce de Leon discovering the Fountain of Youth greeted us as we entered the Columbia Restaurant at Sand Key in Clearwater Beach, Florida a week ago. It is hangs on a long wall among many other pieces of art and old photographs. A line of attractive banquettes of tables lie beneath. Even though the beautiful restaurant over looks the waters of Sand Key, I found myself constantly turning away from the sea view to admire this wonderful work of art. I am a big fan of the French artist Henri Rousseau and it so reminded me of his style. I decided to crop out the banquettes from the shot to focus on the painting and the two other pieces of art that attractively accompany it; along with the listello tile that borders along all the walls. I also did a little research on the painting's history and found out it was commissioned in the early 1950's for the restaurant appropriately in St. Augustine, the source place of the legend of the fountain. No one seems to know why it got moved to Sand Key since the restaurant in St. Augustine still exists. Could not find out the artist name yet, but I am still working on that. So hope you all will enjoy it here as much as I did at our lunch.
