Taughannock State Park, consisting of 750 acres,is located in Ulysses, between the village of Trumansburg and the city of Ithaca in central New York at the southwest end of Cayuga Lake. Taughannock Falls is one of three falls in the park,it is 215 feet tall,33 feet taller than Niigata Falls, and is the highest single-drop waterfalls in the northeastern US. A possible origin for the name comes from the story of a Delaware Indian chief,Taughannock, who was killed in a battle between his invading tribe and the resident Cayuga Indians, his body tossed over the falls. this photo was taken a few years ago from the park overlook in February when the Falls was almost completely frozen over. It is possible to walk up to the base of the falls even in the winter, until the trail is closed when huge icicles form on the gorge wall overhanging the trail. Image was only slightly cropped.
