Oldest greenhouse in VA
Historic Building (s) Contest Entry
This greenhouse, built at Oatlands Plantation in northern VA, was built in 1810 by George Carter, a wealthy plantation owner. He used it to grow exotic fruits such as bananas, strawberries, pineapples and other tropical plants that otherwise don't grown in this area. It's said to be the oldest greenhouse in the south. Mr. Carter is believed to have built it close to his house to show it off as it is of a unique design and he was very proud of it.
