Flamingo Head Shot

The Stare

by Donna Ruiz

I absolutely love the elegant Flamingo. The Caribbean Flamingo, also known as the American Flamingo are highly gregarious birds that live in large noisy flocks. Watching and listening to them is very entertaining. A species whose fossil records date back to more than 10 million years, they are excellent flyers although, they need a large area for a running takeoff. The comb like ridges that can be seen where their upper and lower mandibles meet are used to strain food particles out of water that they pull into their bills when feeding. Such beautiful and unique creatures.
