a Coopers hawk perched on a branch at sunset

Hawk on Branch at Sunset

by Hilma A.

The hawk was in our yard on a railing. I felt a different background would be more suitable. First I masked the hawk and got rid of the railing. With a railing gone, I still wanted to show his entire body, I masked a photo I had of an old bare branch leaving the branch standing alone. I then set the hawk down on the branch and merged the two. Then with an empty background, I found an appropriate sunset and merged it behind the background of the hawk on the branch. I finally blended some of the sunset onto the bottom of the branch to match how it would look naturally.
I take photos of everything: clouds, branches, screens, etc. so they can be merged into composites such as this.
All the work was done with my old Photoshop Elements 11.
Post Type Mixed Media Photography Mixed Media Medium I made a horizontal flip of the bird and branch so the background clouds were out of the way from seeing a clear view of the head. The sunset background was taken at a different time and I felt the colors were complimentary and the scene more interesting.
I used Photoshop Elements.
