The muskrat and it's bigger cousin the beaver are the only mammals that build their homes in the water. They build lodges out of cattails and other vegetation and make tunnels that begin underwater and lead up above water level. Unlike beavers, muskrats do not store food for winter so they make channels in the mud to get from their houses to reach food under the ice. These two muskrats were resting above their lodge on the ice.
