Pileated Woodpecker Close up

Pileated Portrait

I found this male Pileated Woodpecker among the trees and rocks around the Minnehaha Falls area in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The female pileated looks the same as the male except her red crest does not extend all the way to her beak like the male's does and she does not have the red cheek stripe, which makes it easy to tell the difference between them.
