The Mauritius Foody [Foudia ruba] is critically endangered. Less than 200 birds were living in the wild when an Initiative were setting a conservation area with limited access and replanted with native vegetation several years back. Unfortunately, I do not have recent information on the current conservation status.
The bird is 5.5 inches long [about 14 cm], has a large head and a thick neck. The bird has a plump body and a short tail. The head, neck and breast of the male is bright red with a small dark patch between eye and beak. The back, wings and tail; are dark brown streaked with buff, reddish rump. The base of the tail is covered with feathers. The female has duller colors and are mainly dark brown. The birds eat insects, fruit and nectar. [Endangered Animals, Sterling Publishing Co. Inc.
