This is a photo of a female pileated woodpecker(Dryocopus pileatus) that was working on a rotting log on the other side of our pond. Pileateds are the largest woodpeckers in the North America, second in size only to the Ivory Billed Woodpecker, which is believed to be extinct. The sexes are told apart by the the prescence of a red ?mustache? on the males. Almost as large as a crow, they make considerable noise when whacking on tree or fallen log in search of carpenter ants, leaving uniquely shaped rectangular holes as a sign of their presence. They have a shrill, whinnying call that is often heard as they fly through the woods. Adjusted brightness, edited out some branches, and sharpened slightly.
