Ruffled, satiny purple-red petals surround bright yellow centers. It takes a few seasons for these blossoms to reach their full potential, but you will be amply rewarded for your patience.

Tree peonies are long-lived deciduous woody shrubs native to China that will grow in USDA zones 4-9. There are several wild species which have contributed genetics to the cultivated tree peony, Paeonia suffruticosa. The mid to late spring blossoms of tree peonies are unrivaled in size, color and fragrance. Though somewhat slow growing, a mature tree peony can have over fifty, 8-10?? flowers and will bloom for about two weeks. Tree peonies are deer resistant and fairly drought tolerant once established. Plant in well drained fertile soil with 5-6 hours of sun. Tree peonies bloom on ?old wood? and are not cut back in the fall.
