Thank you Donna Ruiz for graciously allowing me to use her image, ?Rainbow Wings? as inspiration for this composition. I have wanted to try to create a detailed image of a dragonfly for some time and when I saw her post I thought this would be a perfect entry for this contest. As you can see, I changed the background. It took me 3 hours to sketch out the composition. I then outlined the dragonfly in ink, hence the mixed media label. The rest of the composition is all watercolors. I started with the flowers and leaves by layering each color and waiting for it to dry after each color. I the layered my watercolors on the dragonfly. I wanted to have the background show through the transparent wings.
