A Fairy Tale

Carver's Woods

Carver's Woods

Johnny sat on grandpa's lap and watched him whittle sticks
and grandpa gave him his first knife, the day that he turned six

Grandpa taught him how to cut and carve, and how to do it right
but before too long Johnny's knife had marked everything in sight

He carved on doors and window frames, the table and the chairs
every inch of the wooden floor, the walls, the beds, the stairs

His parents tried to stop him, and threw all the knives away
but Johnny, using other tools, was carving the next day

Little Johnny Carver, that's what they called him way back then,
was taken deep into the woods when he was only ten

They left him there with water, food, a blanket, and a knife
and it's said that he was happy there, and lived a good long life

A hundred years and more have passed, some say he's carving still
no one really knows for sure, and I guess we never will

But those who frequent Carver's Woods, swear they sometimes see
a little boy running wild, carving each and every tree

Most of my art-related poems have been written after the piece is done, but in this case I started the art, wrote the poem, and then re-started the art several times before I was happy with it. Hope you enjoy this fairy tale!
