Couldn't pass by this Cicada when I saw it. On my way for a yearly check up when I saw the Cicada on the side of the building. I don't run in to Cicadas that often, so it was a must-have shot! This is a type of Cicada called a " Dog-day Harvestfly". It appears a lot more regularly than the 18 year Cicada. This one appears ever one to three years. AS a nymph it spends it's time underground sucking on the roots of trees. One to three years later it digs itself upwards and climbs the nearest tree, splits it's outer skin and appears as this. I think this Cicada is a bout an inch long.It is said the adults have no mouth so they do not feed. The adult as I read lives about three weeks. It usually appears in the month of August. This is the bug you hear humming in the treetops. I hope you enjoy! :o) Helvi
