Diwali, or Deepawali, is India's biggest and most important holiday of the year. It is celebrated for 5 days, the main festival being on Oct 27 this year. The festival gets its name from the row (avali) of clay lamps (deepa) that Indians light inside and outside their homes to symbolize the inner light that protects from spiritual darkness. This festival is as important to Hindus as the Christmas holiday is to Christians.

Diwali or Deepavali also symbolizes the spiritual "victory of light over darkness, good over evil and knowledge over ignorance". During the celebration, temples, homes, shops and office buildings are brightly illuminated.

Over the centuries, Diwali has become a national festival that's also enjoyed by non-Hindu communities.
Camera: Android OnePlus 3T, image slightly cropped and slightly adjusted for light.
