Nature Traditional Photo Contest Contest Entry
We set out before sunrise in a 6 person inflatable Zodiac in the cold waters off the coast of Bonavista Newfoundland looking for whales. After a cold and bumpy start, we saw spouts from a whale pod about 1/2 mile away. There were several humpback whales, which typically range in size from 40-50 long and weigh in at 30-50 tons, by far much larger than our boat and crew. One whale was attracted to us and kept surfacing nearer and nearer to our boat until it was alongside us. I was in the bow getting bounced around and wet most of the time. The benefits were the excitement and a few shots like this one.
