Passiflora is a genus of about 500 flowering plants of the family: Passifloraceae. They are mostly tendril bearing vines, but some shrubs and trees are also known. Some are herbaceous others woody. The flowers are regular with a distinctive corona which ripens into indehiscent fruits with numerous seeds. The fruit are as diverse as the flowers and differ in shape and colors. The majority of Passiflora is found in Central and South America and Mexico. Some species are native present in the US, Southeast Asia, and Oceania. Several species have been naturalized beyond native ranges, as the Blue Passionflower [Passiflora caerulea] which grows wild in Spain. Several species are cultivated outside their natural range for foliage, flowers, and fruits. Hundreds of hybrids are known. The flowers attract pollinators as Bumble Bees, Carpenter Bees, Wasps, Bats, and Hummingbirds. Passiflora are host plants for several Butterfly species which use the leaves as cover for their eggs. The leaves provide food for the caterpillars.
