Photo of the C-47 known as Whiskey 7 that resides at the National Warplane Museum in Geneseo, NY
This C-47 originally served in the Mediterranean Theater in 1943 and the 9th Air Force in England 1944-45 as part of the 316 Troop Carrier Group. It was one of the lead aircraft of the first strike of the D-Day invasion on June 6 1944 over Ste. Mere Elise,Normandy.
After D-day, Whiskey 7 continued to serve throughout the war, afterwards being purchased as surplus and converted to an airliner, flying both cargo and passengers for decades.
In 1993,a private collector purchased Whiskey 7 and eventually donated it to the Museum where it was restored to it?s D-Day configuration in 2005.
Participating in the 70th commemoration of D-Day in 2014, Whiskey 7 again returned to the skies over Normandy, dropping members of the Liberty Jump Team over the original D-Day drop zones.
