That's odd! Contest Entry
the closest wildlife refuge is about an 1 1/2 hr. drive from home,so I always hope there will be something interesting to photograph. Turned out to be pretty boring, until I spotted a male red winged blackbird singing from the side of the wildlife drive, the first I had seen that morning, and being the car makes an excellent blind,I knew I should be able to get some good shots. After I took the first photo, I realized something was a bit odd about this one. He actually looked like the love child of a red wing and a vulture. Other than the complete lack of feathers on his head,he seemed to be okay. I thought his condition was the result of feather mites, but someone else said that this happens when they go through a molt. Whatever the cause it definitely made for an extremely strange looking bird. Adjusted sharpness and brightness.
