Every winter, the cold temps cause the fountain in the middle of the garden pond next to the Glen Iris Inn in Letchworth State Park in New York State to form an incredible ice cone, which some years has grown to 50 feet in height! The fountain was built at the request of William Pryor Letchworth in the 1860?s. Gravity pulls water from the man made Trout pond through a narrowing pipe and finally into a nozzle so tight that the pressure from the water coming downhill sends a spout flying continuously about 50 feet into the air. In this photo, taken at about it?s peak height this past winter, the resulting ice cone resembles a melting candle with a flickering white flame of water vapor. Adjusted brightness, sharpness, edited out a small branch.
