A Story To Tell - Art Contest Entry
The lower part resembles a cross-section through the earth with the various advances in the evolution of the horse through the ages, from the lowest small cat-like forms to the present day. Simultaneously a large crevasse is depicted showing the evolution of horse art, from simple carvings on pebbles (lowest) through the ages to culminate in the modern day's plastic My Little Pony. On the earth's surface are three horses of the present day: the one nearest the crevasse is seeing the art forms for the first time: the two older horses behind him are having a little laugh at his expense.
I painted this in acrylic on a 35"x24" board and used combs and a knife to work into the paint. Texture in part from a nylon fruit bag. Towards the top of the 'earth' section I used crackling medium to indicate stresses in the rock. The fossil horse images in the rock I cut out of stiff paper, glued into position and painted over them.
