In recognition of Black History Month, which is celebrated every February, I used the Paint program on my computer to create this portrait artwork of Althea Gibson. She was one of the first black athletes to cross the color line of international tennis. In 1956, Althea Gibson became the first African American to win a Grand Slam event- the French Championships. In 1957, she won both Wimbledon and the U.S. Nationals, then she won both again in 1958. Throughout her years of playing tennis professionally, Althea Gibson won 11 Grand Slam Tournaments, and she was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame.
