On May 21, 2024, one of the strongest tornadoes would touchdown in Iowa history and weather history. This tornado came during an outbreak from May 20-25. It was rated an EF4 with peak winds around 185 mph. But a radar on wheels picked up a windspeed of get this.... 319 mph 👀👀. This tornado moved to second on the list for strongest tornado windspeed ever recorded. The first happening on May 3, 1999, when an F5 tornado struck the city of Bridge Creek, and Moore having a recorded windspeed of 321mph. There was a lot of conversity about the rating being that it is an EF4 even though it has EF5 winds (200 mph+ is considered an EF5). But with the EF scale the rating comes from damage and not windspeed. Even though that need to change to incorporate windspeed since we do have DOW (Doppler. On. Wheels) and advance radar.
