Picture this.... it is a Summer day. It is the last week of Summer break. You are starting to get ready for school and you are playing outside with friends enjoying the day. You notice it is getting dark off in the distance. You pay it no mind and think it is your passing shower. So you continue to play outside and enjoy the day. Inside your parents, turn to the news to see what is going on. The weather pops up and the meteorologist are talking about storms. But NO mention of tornadoes. As a matter of fact they say there is not a good chance for tornadoes. So they start their adult chores and turn away from the news. As you continue to play outside you start to notice the wind pick up and the it starts raining. You run inside to take shelter. But then you notice something a bit different. The wind begin to howl, the rain begin to pour sideways, it starts hailing, and the sky to green. Then you hear you dad scream "GET IN THE BATHROOM!!!!! IT'S A TORNADO!!!". So all of you get in the bathroom to brace for impact. The house shakes, begins to break, you can feel the debris hit you in the face. You hear the freight train on top, the pressure drops hurting your ears... and then just like that it's gone.... You all survive for look up to see destruction everywhere.
This is what happened in Plainfield, IL on August 28, 1990. As an F5 tornado tore through Plainfield leaving some wicked destruction. INCREDIBLE ground scouring, debarked trees, pulled cement and plumbing out of the ground, wrapped cars and dumpsters around trees and poles. The NWS had a huge failure in giving warnings(they didn't give a warning until 23 minutes AFTER the tornado tore through the city). There are NO pictures or videos of this tornado, so you are probably wondering ... how did you draw this tornado? Well it was not easy, with a lot of research and victim accounts. I was able to imagine how it could possibly had look like, and that is how I drawn it. This was the first F5 up North in the month of August EVER.
