F6 .... keep the letter and number combination in mind as I go through this series of tornadoes. On April 3, 1974 a one of the lifetime tornado outbreak would hit in the states of Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, North Carolina, Virginia, and West Virginia. There were 148 tornadoes on that fateful day. 98 of the 148 was rated F2+. There were 34 - F2s, 34 - F3s, 23 - F4s, and 7 F5s 👀. In this rendering I will be going over the Xenia, OH tornado. The original F6??
Dr. Ted Fujita came up with the original F scale, this is the scale to rate tornadoes on how powerful they are. They typically use indicators such as damage and sometimes size. It was a 6 point scale going from F0 to an F5. When this outbreak happened this tornado tore through the center of Xenia, OH causing some unimaginable damage. This tornado had damage similar to Jarrell (1997, "One day in Jarrell"), Smithville (2011, "2011: Smithville, MS Horror"), Moore (1999, "May 3, 1999), and Jordan (1976, "No love in Jordan"). This tornado was the "Mama" to the Jarrell, Smithville, and Moore. The sister to Jordan (1976). This tornado not only slabbed buildings clean off their foundations for smeared and granulated the debris as well. This left scratch marks on the ground, and was moving very fast as well. This tornado was though to have winds over 300 mph. When Mr. Fujita came to observe the damage he immediately gave it the F6 rating which means inconceivable. But downgraded to an F5 because the scale only goes up to an F5
