I think you are right about this being Dahlia flowers, and I really like the golden colors of them. I especially like the low key and how lovely the light is falling on the flower to the left. Because of the dark background, the flowers are standing out well.
Your focus on the flower closest to us is sharp showing clear and well defined details in the petals, and the exposure is very good.
The format you have cropped the photo into works well, and the flowers are nicely placed within the frame. I think it is a lovely and well taken photo with an excellent DOF, and I wish you luck with the contest.

The light bouncing on the petals is really good but i just wish it had hightlighted the whole flower because i think this would have been worth a six had this been so,don,t no whether a different position might have done that,but just felt it could have made a difference in this one...Brian

Hi Brian, my intent on this image was to create a low key result.
It was, in essence, a special effect to separate it from thousands of images of flower is full light. If you understand the intent you can see why I think 4.5 stars is a bit low.

your welcome if you could read my notes i still think if the light had fallenon the whole thing i would have given this a six,maybe another angle would have been better to do that[i don,t no on that as i was not there]i still think i was right,there are many on here who give five who don,t even look at the photo/art they are reviewing[even giving the sameish words] i review everything i see with a more honest approach[does not mean i am right though and do get it wrong sometimes] but i still stand by honesty rather than a bland approach.

Thanks Bob, you totally got what I wanted to accomplish with this image. It is certainly a low key image. The focus point for the viewer is pretty clear using lighting. Taken in full light it would just have been one more of the thousands of flowers that get posted to FAR. No need for a six star rating, your comments worth way more than that.
