This is a beautiful portrayal of Puffin birds. I did research on them a few months back, thinking to draw one or so for display on the site. The sky is nice and the expression on the face of the puffin looking forward is rather adorable. The commentary is so detailed and interesting. Thanks for sharing everything. Best wishes in the contest.

Thank you very much Glena! Did you manage to do any drawings? They are so distinctive with their wonderful bills and bright orange feet!

Welcome indeed. Not yet but I saved an article or two about them and at least a large image of them in an article. I was intrigued with what I read and saw, I'd never seen or heard of them before. Then, you doing such a fine job brought it all together. Thanks much.

I?m so pleased you?ve now discovered them! I?d offer to email you some photos, but there are so many excellent ones online I don?t think it?s necessary. I?m very much looking forward to seeing your drawings when you get around to doing them, they are wonderful subjects to draw!

always a funny view to watch these birds with as much fish as they are able to carry in their beak;
an excellent close up with very sharp details;

They ARE fascinating birds,aren't they?
They always make me think of the extinct Great Auk and the monstrous hypothetical 'Whale Penguin' that my old associate Dr.Dixon theorized might one day evolve to hunt krill in the southern oceans!
That's a terrific picture,Charlotte!
'Good Show'!

Thank you so much Sean!
Yes, they really are fascinating and such comical little things. On the islands where I took this, there are 43,000 pairs that nest there every year, plus thousands of other sea birds, from the Arctic Tern, to Guillemots, Shags, Razorbills and Eider Duck, plus all the usual gulls and cormorants! It?s an incredible sight!

Oh thank you So much Easton Bay! Your wonderful comments and high rating have made my day!
I put all the info in because they are such strange and fascinating little birds, they are much smaller than they look in photos (about the size of a jackdaw) and with their fat bodies and very short wings, when they fly they look like oversized bumblebees! They are my favourite of all birds.

I call it as I see it. You are most welcome, Charlotte!

What a fantastic shot and once again really appreciate the info. While in Scotland last year my friend and I had hoped to get up in the area to mabe see them. Didn't happen but I still think they are awesome. Love the framing and both the side and front view you were about to capture. Good luck.

Thank you so very much for your great review and high rating!
What a shame you didn?t get to see the puffins on your Scottish trip, they are such an incredible sight to see, thousands of them and thousands of other types of birds too!

Thanks Brian!
Yes you have to go by boat, but one of the islands is owned by the National Trust and (for a fee of course) you can spend an hour wandering around it - you tend to get attacked by Arctic Terns who swoop down to peck your head though, so a hat is very necessary! Lol I took this shot on the cliffs of that island.
If ever you do get to Northumberland, the boat trip is an absolute must, there are something like 43, 000 pairs of puffins who nest there between May and July - plus many, many others species of birds!
