I wonder if this guy is a black headed sugar ant. His body shape and the red coloring with the black head make me think that but I am in no way an insect expert! This guy is interesting looking. The red is such a lovely deep shade in this shot.

It's a scary ,BIG ant! I noticed the reflection right off,this one is very well focused,a great diagonal image. It looks like it would be rather'juicy' if stepped on. I would really hate to see one that is supersized like your great photo. The very best in the contest with this photo!

He's not as big as in the photo. He was about 1/2", the biggest ant I've ever seen. The ant was also very plump too. I found him in Maine at my brother's cabin. They seemed to be everywhere. I don't think there was any place you could sit down in the grass without having one or several crawl on you. There were none inside the cabin though. Thanks for the wonderful review and wishes for the contest.

This is a great close up of this ant! The photo shows a lot of detail including the antennae and the tiny hairs on the back of it's body. The reflection is cool. I never would have imagined a reflection on an insects body. Great entry for the contest! Best of luck!
