This is an excellent shot of a difficult subject, you've handled it very well! Well done!
I spent seven years living in the very north of England where they often get to see this amazing spectacle and I never once managed to see it! I probably went to bed too early! Lol
So I'm particularly impressed and envious of your shot! What time of night did you take it?

Thank you, Charlotte! It really is quite an infrequent experience. My dream is to find my way to Norway to see the lights.

Oh yes, that would be wonderful - can I come with you? Lol
    You?re welcome.

Think the best place to capture this is Norway but other places do get them but maybe not so strong as in this case, but saying that i have never seen them so at least you did and managed to get a photo at the same time so well done for that...Brian

Oh this is a stunning capture! I really like the composition showing the vastness of the star laden sky and the beautiful light with it's different hues. Exposure may have been an educated guess but you got it spot on - from years of experience I would think. It's a dramatic and really enjoyable image that I wish I had a 6 for. Here's a virtual 10!

Thank you, Christine. In this type of photography the bulb setting is my friend so I can experiment with timing and exposure.

A good looking nature image posted here! Your fine, full and appropriate composition offers us an enjoyable view of that natural phenomenon.
Colours, textures and tones are good. Well taken!

The Northern Lights will occasionally make a showing here in upstate New York too but it's a very rare occurence!
It looks like you guys had a great show and this nicely-presented photo you captured is Terrific!

Seeing the lights here is also an infrequent occasion, but such a sight to see when they reach this far south. Thank you, Sean, for your score and comments.

By guess and by gosh has worked more than once for me Montana shooter. Nice work with the bulb setting. I think you are the first shooter on this site besides myself who ever tried that function.

From what I see in this take the length of time the shutter was open wasn't too long because I don't see any star trails. And all that means is that you nailed the exposure.

Some might say there is too much night sky. I might agree to that but not in this particular instance. The sky is what this piece is all about.

Ya done good... Bob

The deep purple makes a nice contrast against the Aurora's bright light.

Thank you, Bob. With night time photography the bulb setting is the only way for me to go! I'm glad to hear you also use it. I don't have the experience or patience to be more concise with each shot. LOL

    Thank you for your comments.

A beautiful picture of the Aurora Borealis lighting up the sky over Montana along the horizon the colours changing as you watch them the stars twinkling in the sky above. A wonderful composition framing and lighting taken with superb camera techniques and sharp focus.

I would love to get shots like these! I was in Colorado but it rained most of the time so no night shots. The colors are beautiful. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you, Lynnmarie! Rain sure makes it hard to see the lights but every once in a while the weather behaves.

That is really lovely. I love the soft glow of the Aurora. And the beautiful stars surrounding it. When I try to take nighttime pics they always look washed out, even without a flash
