What an interesting piece of sculpture you have photographed. It certainly attracts and holds one's attention. The lighting is very good, and the detail is great.
Thank you for the explanation of where this is located and what it is.

Yes, there are great expressive details showing in this beautiful picture. I like the contrasting and the way textures blended in to the subject.

Great job with the angle and the light for this. It almost looks like this statue has cucumbers or something on the eyes! lol. Good job presenting the notes for this one as well.

Beautiful mask I love the eyes which im guessing represent the sun or the wheels of life Its a really interesting part of history and you have captured it well. I love the detail in the stones and the worn away feel completely natural and captured naturally.

We still don't know for sure what the meaning of the masks is. It's only 21 years that Kohunlich were discovered and most of it is still uncovered. But I think you could be very close with your guesses of the sun. Not the wheels of life. The Maya didn't used wheels nor animals. Everything was carried by man on the head.

I believe it has a strong connection with egyptian pyramids I think every one was roaming the earth and seas far before we where taught in history.

An incredible and astonishing image, cleo.

Beautifully attractive in how the red coloring helps the face to stand out in such bold relief in relation to the rest of the rocks.

The ruins of Kohunlich must be intriguing to see. I've always been attracted to anything Mayan. But I"I've never heard of these in the Yucatan.

Your artist notes make me want to learn more and as soon as I can find some extra time I'm going to google Pyramid of the Masks to see what else I can find out.

Would love to see the giant staircase flanked by the six heads.

So appreciate you showing this, along with your write up, that has been a little educational adventure this morning.

    Thank you so much.
Here are a few sites what should make your search easier:
    http://www.majanbeachgarden.com/Kohunlich.html
    http://locogringo.com/reserche/dzibanche.html
    Some more about Mayas on:
    http://www.indians.org/welker/maya.htm
There are several article on National Geographic [changing] just go to the side and search MAYA, http://ngm.national geographic.com
I'll will post a picture of a part of the staircase in my portfolio. A picture of the whole staircase is inpossible. If you are fahr enough away the trees are in the way but it is too huge to get it all if you are closer. If you stay before the temple you can't see the top.

I must set aside one entire day to review these sites. You've given me a chore - but I'm grateful. I so appreciate them, Heidi. It will make the search easier. I really am a fanatic with the Mayan culture. I look forward to seeing your photo in your portfolio. Thanks again!

You need a vacation in the Yucatan. If you get the transportation I find a home for you without cost.

You so right. What a vacation the Yucatan would be. Would love to take you up on that some day! Thanks!

This is wonderful. I wish I had known about it when I visited the area a few years ago. Of course, my friend didn't even let me get to Tulum --because he felt that after Chichen Itza it wouldn't be worth the trip!! Anyway--thank you for sharing this very cool place. I like the angle you have taken the photo from. The composition is good, focusing right on this one mask. I think bringing up the contrast, or shadows would really bring out the details in this work.
Thank you so much for all the great information.

Yes this place is fascinating and there a many not known sites. But it was probably a good idea not to go to Tulum. It got ruined by the tourism over the last 10 years, but much earlier as the foliage were taken of completely and partly burned of damaging the stucco, just as Chichen Itza. Through if you know for what and were to look the could be still interesting. About 95% of Yucatan's Maya sites are still uncovered.

Very interesting indeed. isn't it amazing how things like this can last for centuries yet we live in a made now gone tomorrow society. It makes you want to put yourself in the makers place and try to find what their aim was for doing these faces. Lost in time the reasons

Yes it is fascinating. But no photo can give you the feeling you have if you see them. It's as if being in a different time and and space of a unknown world.

Its a beautifull photograph, very simple but the notes and history has made it very striking. Try to add some contrast and it would show more details. All the best for the contest :)
